Someone who is known for giving no apologises for who she is and what she shares with the world, true expression involves being true to yourself and never apologising for being you. Meet Lynn Ban, creating jewellery without any apologies. Born in Singapore by the age of four, Lynn and her family had relocated to New York, fast forward to 2011 and Lynn had launched her first jewellery collection of timeless pieces designed in black rhodium, pearls, silver and diamonds. We had the pleasure of interviewing Lynn Ban whilst she attended the Fenty x Puma A/W17 show in Paris, keep scrolling for our FIRST interview.
Lynn would you tell me a little about your childhood?
Lynn: I was born in Singapore and raised in New York City. My mother is a Gemmologist and she studied Fashion Design, I think I have always loved jewellery. There is something about jewels that fascinates me, my mother is responsible for nurturing the love for accessories and jewels.
Do you remember your first design?
Lynn: Yes, A pair of really over the top chandelier earrings that weighed a ton.
Do you happen to still have the pair?
Lynn: Yes I still have them!!
I know you have been creating jewellery for A-List celebrities, I don’t think there isn’t a celebrity who hasn’t yet worn your designs from Rihanna, Beyoncé, Nick Minaj and Lady Gaga the list goes on!! Let’s talk about your involvement with Rihanna and the FentyxPuma collection, how did this come about?
Lynn: We have collaborated with Rihanna on four of her tours and many videos. So when she announced that she would stage her first fashion show for FentyxPuma, I was hoping that I would get to be involved because I knew it would be so good!! When Rihanna asked me if I wanted to do the jewellery for her show I was so thrilled – still am!!!
Now as I look back at a previous post I had written about Rihanna signing her contract with Puma, and I remembered saying I bet pearls will be involved as I noticed that Rih was dripping in Marie Antoinette style pearls. FentyxPuma are due to debut the third collection this Monday at Paris Fashion Week, you can have read of the happenings of FentyxPuma S/S 17 here.
Lynn: The pearls were all her. The first show was darker and more Goth, the second show she said “I’m feeling pearls” VOILA!!
Tell me what was your favourite piece from the accessories?
Lynn: First season definitely the leather diamond cross, season two I loved the chandelier earrings.
Takes you back to your first ever designs, did you find yourself getting carried away or is it work as usual?
Lynn: Oh, definitely carried away, when you work with Rihanna you have got to be on your game!! She totally gets everything and wants things a certain way. If she doesn’t like something she says so, working with Rihanna is most certainly fun.
If you could design/collaborate who would you choose and who would you turn down?
Lynn: I wouldn’t do anything differently. But I do wish that I could have worked with Amy Winehouse, she was such a talent and had great style.
Lynn last things what quote has been handed down to you through family or simply what quote do you live by?
Lynn: SAY NO MORE THAN YES
